Rebels Get a Walk-off Victory Against the Sun Devils

By: Emmet Kenney

The UNLV Rebels got a dramatic walk-off to secure the 11-10 victory against Arizona State Tuesday night at the Las Vegas Ballpark. Edarian Williams had a monster game going 4 for 4 with 2 triples including a lead-off triple in the bottom of the 9th to eventually set up the winning run.

It improved the Rebels’ record to 16-9 overall. The Rebels have struggled a little bit in nonconference play, but after a hot start in conference play, the Rebel bats were hot against the Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils got off to a hot start in the 1st inning pushing out to an early 2-0 lead after the 1st. The Rebels’ offense and defense really picked up after the 1st getting a 4 run 2nd and adding 2 more runs in the 3rd to catapult out to a 6-2 lead after 3 innings. The Rebels were able to respond to an Arizona State 2 run home run with 3 more runs in the bottom half of the 4th to extend the lead to 9-4.

Arizona State did not go down without a fight, however. The Sun Devils scored 5 runs combined in the 6th and 7th innings to pull within 1 of the Rebels and were able to get the tying run in the top of the 9th.

The Rebels got the bottom of the 9th started hot with Edarian Williams hitting a triple off of the top of the wall. With Williams on 3rd with no one out, the Sun Devils decided to intentionally walk the next two batters to load the bases with nobody out. Reigning Freshman of the week for the Mountain West Santino Panaro came up to bat to hopefully drive in the winning run. After a pitching change by the Sun Devils, the pitcher Brock Peery threw a wild pitch past the catcher allowing the winning run Williams to come in for the score and the dramatic victory for the Rebels.

Pitcher Josh Sharman got the start for the Rebels and finished with 5.2 IP 8 H 5 R 2 ER 6 K. Hayden Neirman got the victory in the decision with 2.2 IP 2 H 1 R 1 ER 1 K.

Elite Eight Preview

Elite Eight Preview By: Emmet Kenney 5 Houston vs 2 Villanova: This is a very interesting matchup to start the Elite Eight. Both teams play great defense and are two well-coached teams. Houston is a very physical team that likes to get offensive rebounds and that is how they were able to find success against Arizona in the last round. Villanova likes to shut you down on defense and hit key shots to methodically pull away from opponents. The key more »
