Elite Eight Preview

By: Emmet Kenney

5 Houston vs 2 Villanova:
This is a very interesting matchup to start the Elite Eight. Both teams play great defense and are two well-coached teams. Houston is a very physical team that likes to get offensive rebounds and that is how they were able to find success against Arizona in the last round. Villanova likes to shut you down on defense and hit key shots to methodically pull away from opponents. The key to victory in this matchup is which team is going to make the critical shots down the stretch and can Villanova keep Houston from getting offensive rebounds. If Villanova can do that, then they will be back in the Final Four, but if Houston is able to attack the glass, they will be going to their second straight Final Four.
4 Arkansas vs 2 Duke:
After Arkansas pulled the major upset against top-seeded Gonzaga, they get another matchup against a team with a similar style to Gonzaga. Duke shot the ball amazingly in their Sweet Sixteen victory and they’ll be looking for much of the same again. Arkansas, on the other hand, played a phenomenal game against Gonzaga and slowed down their offense. I think the key for Arkansas to pull the upset is if they can win the battle in the paint and slow down Paolo Banchero to force other players on Duke to step up and make the big plays.
10 Miami vs 1 Kansas:
It was an ugly game, but Kansas is the only 1 seed that escaped the Sweet Sixteen and now has a matchup against an underrated 10 seed Miami. These two teams play similar styles and almost have the exact same stats so the key in this one is which team’s stars step up. Ochai Agbaji for Kansas has been phenomenal, but the surprising player that has stepped up for Kansas has been Remy Martin, as he is averaging 19.3 points per game in the tournament after only averaging a little over eight in the regular season. If Miami can slow him and Agbaji down to force other players from Kansas to step up they have a great chance to pull the upset and make the Final Four.
15 Saint Peter’s vs 8 North Carolina:
The magical run for the Peacocks continued with a 67-64 upset victory of the 3 seed Purdue. Saint Peter’s was not able to shut down the big men from Purdue, but they were able to slow them down and make them miss key shots. The Peacocks are playing loose and with confidence and if they can get the ball out of Caleb Love’s hands and force North Carolina to take bad shots, their Cinderella run can continue. North Carolina has the advantage across the board, but the guard play from Saint Peter’s in this tournament has been phenomenal and could be the matchup to keep an eye on throughout the game.
