Russia Invades Ukraine

By Hannah Dunbar

Russia is currently invading Ukraine as most people feared it would. On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine. It just entered the sixth day of invasion on Tuesday, March 1. Russian tanks and armored vehicles continue to inch closer to the capital of Kyiv. Fighting continues to intensify in Kyiv and in other large cities.

In Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, Russia killed at least 11 people and wounded dozens of others after they shelled several sites. Among the sites hit were Kyiv’s main TV tower and the holocaust memorial.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blamed a Russian missile and called the attack a war crime.

“It’s frank, undisguised terror …Nobody will forgive. Nobody will forget,” said Ukrainian President Zelenskyy.

Hours later after the first shelling, more Russian shelling struck Kyiv’s main TV tower along with the holocaust memorial- killing five more people and injuring five others, according to Ukrainian officials. TV broadcasts were temporarily knocked offline, but some channels were up and running again a short time later.

Ukraine is not going down without a fight as Ukrainian soldiers fight back against the Russian soldiers. Kyiv is outnumbered but determined Ukrainian troops have slowed Russian troops’ advance and held onto the capital and other key cities.

It is unknown what exactly Russian President Vladimir Putin wants, but western officials believe that he wants to overthrow Ukraine’s government and replace it with a compliant regime, reviving Moscow’s Cold War-era influence.

The Russian economy has plummeted from this war. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine led his country to freeze its stock market Monday as he presided over a meeting with top officials over the economic crisis. The Russian central bank also hiked interest rates to 20 percent from 9.5 percent in an emergency measure to protect the ruble’s value. It is likely that the Russian economy is going to collapse as a result.

The United States and European Union have limited sanctions on Russia’s biggest banks and its’ elite, freezing the assets of the country’s Central Bank located outside the country, and excluded its financial institutions from the SWIFT (a service that facilitates global transactions among thousands of financial institutions) bank messaging system.

Russian citizens had their access limited to the SWIFT bank, restricting their use of its massive foreign currency reserves. Russian citizens remain anxious about the prospects of a lingering economic downturn.

An estimate of 660,000 people has fled Ukraine for neighboring countries since the beginning of the invasion. The situation looks set to become Europe’s largest refugee crisis this century. Filippo Grandi, who is the United Nations (U.N.) High Commissioner for refugees stated that the U.N. expects the total to reach 4 million in the coming weeks.

Poland has seen the most refugees thus far. Hungary, Romania, and Moldova are also accepting tens of thousands of refugees. Germany’s national train company issued a special free ticket for Ukrainian refugees to reach relatives.

Currently, the U.N. is trying to hold Russian President Vladimir Putin accountable for the Ukraine invasion. The Human Rights Council urged Putin to unconditionally stop the “unprovoked attack” and withdraw its forces from Ukraine.
