The Highlights of the Super Bowl

By Hannah Dunbar

Here is what I believe to be the highlights of the 2022 Super Bowl. During the Super Bowl 56, a variety of commercials and trailers were shown, and of course, there was the great Halftime Show.

One of the many showings that stuck with me was a trailer for the new “Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power”. It is a prequel to “Lord of the Rings” series made by Amazon. It will be released on Sep. 2, 2022 and can be watched on Amazon Prime.

“The Rings of Power” is set in the Second Middle Age. At first, I thought it took place between The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings, but that is not the case.  It takes place thousands of years before “The Lord of The Rings” movies and “The Hobbit”.

In 2017, Amazon announced that it had acquired the rights to adapt Tolkien’s work. Amazon has thrown billions of dollars at this project. The company guarantees that there will be multiple seasons and additionally, spinoffs. In fact, season 2 is already being worked on in the United Kingdom.

The story of this series will follow the creation of the titular Rings of Power, including the One Ring. It seems fans of the “Lord of The Rings” franchise will have something to look forward to. If you’re a fan, it might not hurt to check it out.

Amazon also had another commercial showing what could happen if “Alexa” could read your mind. The ad starts with Alexa setting a reminder to buy mouthwash after the celebrity couple wakes up in bed together. Then Alexa reminds Jost to fake his own death on the day Johansson is slated to perform in a play he appears less than enthused to attend. It had me busting out laughing.

A huge trailer that dropped was “Jurassic World: Dominion”. Not only do fans get to see the franchise go on, but they get to see their favorite original stars from the previous movies on the big screen. Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum are all making their comeback. It will be released on June 10, 2022.

The best ad yet, in my opinion, was the GM’s “Dr. Evil”. Four of the original cast members from the trilogy movies “Austin Powers” were reunited to create this commercial promoting GM’s new fleet of electric vehicles.

It starts off with Dr. Evil, the nemesis of Austin Powers, took over as CEO of GM. He is being urged by his minions to take climate change more seriously and trying to reduce GM’s carbon footprint.

His son, Scott informs him that he has a grandson and Dr. Evil tries to name him “Baby Me”, but Scott informs him that his name is “Kyle”. By the end of the ad, Dr. Evil takes one of the GM cars, leaving Scott behind and kidnapping Kyle. It was such a blast to the past and a hilarious commercial.

Then the Halftime Show was excellent and truly set the tone of the 2022 Super Bowl. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige and 50 Cent brought back some old music that we all loved and grew up on. It was also the first time that Rap has ever been played at the Super Bowl.

Dr. Dre opened the performance behind a mock mixing board, vibing to the music. Then there was a collaboration between Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. They made a tribute to Tupac with the song “California Love”. After that, Eminem came up and was singing “Love Yourself”. Lamar sang “Alright”, along with a pair of songs from Mary J. Blige.

50 Cent was a welcome surprise! He was hanging upside down on stage, performing his hit song “In Da Club”. The performance by all of these celebrities was spectacular and full of energy. During the end of “Love Yourself, Enimen took a knee on the stage.

Planet Fitness had an ad played at the Super Bowl featuring Lindsay Lohan. It starts by showing her exercising on a treadmill then cuts off to a show of Jeopardy with her outspoken Dennis Rodman. After that, it pans off to Lindsay sleeping in her bedroom while the paparazzi cry outside over not being able to get photos of her. Actor Danny Trejo appears as Lindsay Lohan is bedazzling his ankle bracelet. It ends with William Shatner talking to the audience as Lindsay Lohan passes by him to leave the gym.

It’s a great commercial since Lindsay Lohan has struggled with fame for quite some time now. It was quite refreshing to see and really cool to see all these big names in such a short ad.

There are too many occurrences that happened to list, but those were the best parts of the Super Bowl in my opinion. I feel that this year’s Halftime Show was way better than last years.
